Russia and Seychelles: 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Russia and Seychelles: 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations!

On June 29, the Republic of Seychelles celebrated the 50th anniversary of its independence from the United Kingdom. Diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and Seychelles were established on June 30, 1976—the day after the African island nation declared its independence.

In 1881, the Dzhigit, a vessel of the Russian Imperial Navy, became the first Russian naval ship to call at Seychelles to replenish its supplies of fresh water and coal and to provide rest for its crew.

Since 1999, Russia and Seychelles have been bound by a bilateral agreement on cooperation in the field of tourism. Since 2015, the two countries have also maintained a visa-free regime for short-term travel by their citizens.

To take part in the parade marking the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence, a ceremonial unit of the 154th Separate Preobrazhensky Commandant Regiment arrived in Victoria.
