Russian Experts to Assist Seychelles in Securing UNESCO World Heritage Status for Venn’s Town

Russian Experts to Assist Seychelles in Securing UNESCO World Heritage Status for Venn’s Town!

Russian experts will carry out 3D mapping of the historic Seychellois site of Venn’s Town, also known as Mission Lodge, to support the Government of Seychelles in its bid to have the site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The mission will strengthen the technical evidence underpinning the nomination dossier by applying advanced surveying technologies and state-of-the-art data documentation methods.

The work is being carried out under the Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2026 between the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Rescue Archaeology Centre and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of the Republic of Seychelles. Venn’s Town is a landmark of great historical significance for Seychelles. It was home to the country’s first school for the children of formerly enslaved people. The institution officially opened on 20 March 1876.
