Launch of the Seychelles National Diaspora Policy

The Government of Seychelles, in collaboration with the Consular Diaspora Affairs Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs, has officially launched the Seychelles National Diaspora Policy.

The event was honored by the presence of the President of Seychelles, Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, as well as First Lady Linda Ramkalawan, Vice President Ahmed Afif and other distinguished guests.

The new policy stems from the Cabinet of Ministers’ endorsement of the National Diaspora Engagement Policy, which emphasizes the Government’s dedication to strengthen ties with the diaspora community. By leveraging their skills, experience and resources, the policy aims to promote national development. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the Government's commitment to engage with all Seychellois citizens, regardless of their residence abroad.

In his opening remarks, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, emphasized the importance of the diaspora in contributing to the nation’s social and economic development. “Our diaspora communities play a crucial role in our national development. This policy reflects our commitment to recognize and harness the valuable contributions of our fellow Seychellois across the world,” said Minister Radegonde.

The National Diaspora Policy outlines three main pillars:

  • Governance of Diaspora Engagement: This pillar aims to establish effective channels of communication between the Government and diaspora communities to keep them informed and engaged.
  • Diaspora Diplomacy: Local and Global: This pillar seeks to strengthen consular services and protect the rights of Seychellois citizens. It aims to create communication and networking platforms that facilitate regular interaction between the diaspora and the Government, and to preserve Creole culture.
  • Diaspora Capital for Development: This pillar focuses on raising the diaspora investment to contribute significantly to the nation’s progress. It promotes tourism, heritage preservation and mentorship programs.

The Government looks forward to working closely with diaspora communities to implement the policy and achieve its goals. This collaborative effort is expected to yield significant benefits to both the country and its citizens abroad.
